Sometimes referred to as The Battle of the Princes, the bloody battle at Ndondakusuka on 2 December 1856 ended a bitter power struggle between the sons of King Mpande. King Mpande lost six sons in the battle which is believed to be the bloodiest battle ever fought on South African soil. The victory paved the way for Prince Cetshwayo to eventually be crowned king when Mpande died in 1872.

No memorial marks the site, but the battle covered the vast area now covered by sugarcane on the north bank of Thukela River in the area of the bridge crossing on the R102.
