It’s hard to believe that this deserted area of Acacia trees and thornveld bush was once one of the biggest cities in southern Africa. King Shaka established his main capital here in the early 1800s. Archaeological surveys confirm a large oval-shaped layout with an outer circumference of several kilometres and about 1 400 traditional houses built around a large central parade ground for grand military displays.

KwaBulawayo is adjacent the Cultural Centre and is marked by a stone cairn.
