Take a detour off Route 66 and see the Big Five in Africa’s oldest game sanctuary – the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Park. Credited with saving both the black and white rhinos from extinction and today boasts the highest density of these animals in the world. The Park – established in 1895 and before that protected as the exclusive hunting preserve of the Zulu kings – is rich in elephant, lion, buffalo, giraffe and antelope. A variety of accommodation is on offer ranging from luxury accommodation at Hilltop Camp, bushcamps, a tented safari camp and thatched lodges.
Cengeni Gate is about 30kms from Ulundi on the P700. The gate is open 05h00-19h00 (Nov-Feb) and 06h00-08h00 (March-October).
