The site of Nodwengu was the royal capital of King Mpande who reigned from 1840 till his death in 1872. His grave is within the precincts of the complex in the commercial heart of Ulundi. King Mpande was the son of Senzangakhona and the half brother of King Shaka and King Dingane. A site museum has been erected next to the grave.
